Bruna hails from the Veneto region of Italy. Her husband, Frank, is from the Molise region. We are talking about North and South here. There is no love lost between Northern and Southern Italians. They met in the United States, fell in love, and married.

As I have confessed earlier, I don’t eat seafood. Period. But when I observed Frank Jr. almost inhaling a huge dish of this pasta, his eyes glazed over in ecstasy, I knew that it must be superlative. Are you beginning to see the pattern? Italians begin as friends and become family.

1 pound spaghetti

1 medium onion

4 cloves garlic, minced or crushed

¼ cup olive oil

8 ounces beer or white wine

1 13¾-ounce can chicken broth

¼ cup chopped fresh Italian (flat-leafed) parsley

1 pound shrimp, cleaned and deveined

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cook the spaghetti al dente, drain well, and set aside. In a large saucepan, sauté the chopped onion and garlic in the olive oil. When lightly golden, pour the beer or white wine into it. Simmer 1 minute. Add the chicken broth. Let boil approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Add the chopped parsley and shrimp. Boil an additional 3 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour over the cooked spaghetti and serve.
